IN SHORT: Yech. [Not Rated, 90 minutes]

Once upon a time there was a fair young thing named Leila Sweet (Shalom Harlow) who was left at the altar. She swears off marriage. She swears off men and she's kept both promises to age 29, when she decides its time to have a baby and lose her, um, title of the film. this delights her Uncle Ernest (Gil Rodgers) and his partner Mammy (David McCallum). Leila runs a muffin shop with two employees (Heather Matarazzo you know. Aleksa Palladino as Darcy will be mentioned below) and one customer (Matt Servitto). Besides the hundreds of losers that answered a personal ad that she placed, Leila has her pick of a sweetly embarrassed ob/gyn doctor named Beverly (Jake Weber) or a clown (Donovan Leitch).

It would have been nice if directors Jon Glascoe and Joseph Pierson had discussed their ultimate goals for this flick before they started shooting. One tried to film a romantic meeting of two extraordinarily different people. The other seemed to be shooting a farce. While it's possible to successfully create a romantic face, Cherry ain't it.

And neither of them knew what to do with their actors. Most of the supporting characters are so underwritten that they have nothing to do (this especially true of Servitto's character) so they do too much and draw attention from the principals. There are a couple of good New York style bits of humor, but overall the thing so lacks a focus that it looks like a first effort with better than average funding. I may add this to my list of "must sees" for wannabe filmmakers -- it's a good thing the website has the original script up for comparison to what made it to the screen (which had an "additional writing by" credit -- in my film school days that meant trying to fix something once shooting has already started)

I never would've caught this but the woman behind me did -- Darcy's roots didn't match from scene to scene. No big deal for me, though.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Eight Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Cherry, he would have paid...
