The only thing I hate more than good films released with no support (and are soon dumped in DVD bins) are those good films that flash by in a week in December, strictly aiming for an Oscar nomination, and then duck and cover until January. I hate it even more when my one of my personal picks for best of the year -- Barney's Version starring Paul Giamatti -- does that duck and cover. So... noting that it really won't be seen until next yar (ditto Halle Berry's Frankie and Alice, which pulled the same stunt and did get nominations . . .)

and I've been onlne for years, way before the Internet happened.
The Social Network did nothing for me.

Mao's Last Dancer -- the most unexpected, and pleasant, surprise of the year.
The Last Exorcism
Green Zone [we'd tell you more, except that 3 hard drive deaths wiped out all complete copies of our review.]

and, finally, what will win Oscar this year...
The King's Speech
Across the board it's the best film... but it's really best for Brits and film students. It will win Best Picture at Oscar-time . . .
and it will bore the crap out of the average American. Truth hurts.

You may have seen a full page ad in your Sunday paper with 40 or so critics quoted: "Incredible!" "Phenomenal" "Best Movie Ever"
and every single one of 'em was either lying or misquoted or so amazingly off the mark that every other critic I know here in New York couldn't believe it either. If you were lucky you listened to us and never heard of Guy and Madeleine on a Park Bench.

We don't have to expain this one.

We could, at least, enjoy (sic) the music.

Finally there is the film that fills the highest echelons of arthouse pandering . . . which is a shame because Sofia Coppola is a writer/director of some talent. Where that talent went in the case of her film Somewhere is unknown to us. Like Guy and Madeine on a Park Bench, Somewhere was so terrible we wrote nothing. We can endure only so much.
And, yes, of course there were more than three terrible films this year. Most deserve to be forgotten.
Certain films deserve to be remembered.
