IN SHORT: OK thriller but not much more. [Rated R for Some Sequences of Violence and Language. 118 minutes]

Apparently some major changes have occurred in the international police community since Cranky started watching movies (an unspecified number of) decades ago. We were always under the impression that the international police --Interpol -- had basic jurisdictional abilities. That they could make arrests after trailing multi-national crooks all across the Old and New Worlds. Well, that's not the case anymore, according to Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owens), who sees  his partner killed before his eyes. Said partner was arranging for the exchange of information about illegal activities conducted by an international bank. He and the stoolie never made it ten steps from the cordial handshake goodbye.

The hunt for the original culprit and the killer of his partner continues in New York City, where Salinger is joined in the hunt by Manhattan Asst. District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts). Back and forth across the Atlantic they go. Cooperative witnesses are found and, just as mysteriously killed by the all-powerful and all-invisible agents of The International Bank (IBBC for short). If I followed the explanation of motive correctly, said bank is in the business of loaning too much money to governments that can't afford to borrow it; all to finance the purchase of armament from China to resell to Arab countries in the middle east.

That alone is enough to make the mind fade to blank, if not for the thankful bursts of gunfire and squealing car tires in the occasional chase.

We think that's the basics ... honestly, Cranky spent the entire run of The International doubled over from muscle spasm in my back and chest. Very painful. Had The International been anything truly deep -- and not just a basic international conspiracy to run the world underlying a lot of chases and gunfire -- you wouldn't be reading anything about it.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to The International, he would have paid . . .

Simply put, The International is a decent sit. We didn't care much for its ending but, overall, a great international set of chases delivers enough eye candy to make this a passable dateflick.
