IN SHORT: Rude. Crude. Incredibly Funny and, more to the point, fun. [Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, nudity, language, some drug and alcohol use - all involving teens. 108 minutes]

Several months ago Cranky was invited to have a look at a rough cut of what has become the film Sex Drive. It was funny -- fine for Gen Y and all that-- but not funny enough to make a middle aged critic rave. That was then. The new, improved, final cut version of  Sex Drive is a scream. Non-stop laughs from minute one to the sappy where are they now and what happened finale. In between we were laughing so hard we didn't think all that much about the deja vu experience we were having.

That being written BEWARE: if you have problems with lesser four letter words or nudity, male and/or female (either sex can get pretty gross) stay away. Gens Y and Z should have no problem with much of the material in the film. There's one sequence that is kinda gross - you'll know it when you see it. Just shut your eyes and it'll be done with right quick. Something like sex, which is all the hint we'll give <g>

So here's star of the show Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman). Eighteen years old. Ready to go off to college. One problem, and apparently this is a real big problem now (which it wasn't back when we were eighteen) . . . Ian is a stone cold virgin.  Sure he's got an eye for a co-worker at the mall donut shoppe, but she's already involved with another man. Ian's fourteen year old brother. On the other end of the spectrum is Ian's big brother Rex (James Marsden), who mercilessly beats down his brother with as much vigor as he spends tending to his car, a 1969 Pontiac GTO orange spitfire. A real beauty. We'll come back to that.

Ian's got two BFF's: Lance (Clark Duke), whose ability to score with any lady he chooses - sometimes two or three a day - is astounding. Lance, you see, is a glasses wearing, pudgy boy. Not what you'd think of when you imagine a stud. More power to him. Ian's bestest best friend, since age two or so, is Felicia (Amanda Crew). Of course Ian swoons for the girl but he knows darn well that the surest way to destroy a bestest friend is to make all romantic. So he doesn't make a move. Felicia, on the other hand, has a well suppressed desire for a totally different character, which we will not reveal. There's one more player to this tale, Ian's Internet lady friend "Ms. Tasty" (Katrina Bowden). She's a drop dead gorgeous blonde, and only 9 hours drive away from Ian's homebase in Chicago. So, while Rex is away for the weekend, Lance convinces Ian to take Tasty up on her offer to hook up. The pair, and Felicia of course, "borrow" the GTO and head off for a quick hook up.

Things go totally wrong, of course, when the car bites the dust somewhere in the westernmost reaches of Amish territory - which in this case is somewhere in Indiana (true). Rescued by an "ace" Amish mechanic Ezekiel (Seth Green) the threesome get to enjoy the Amish rite of Rumspringa while 'zeke's pals fix the GTO. Rumspringa, as explained in the film, is a period during which young Amish get to enjoy the "heathen world" before accepting the stringent lifestyle rules of their church. In other words, the kidlets get to party their brains out. At Rumspringa Lance's eye is caught by the lovely Mary (Alice Greczyn) and he, strangely enough, behaves like a perfect gentleman.

Dummy should have paid more attention to the rules of Rumspringa. Afterwards, the road trip continues. Rex, meanwhile, has discovered that his car is gone. He is mad and on the hunt and that is all we will tell you. Trust us, there's a whole mess of stuff yet to come for this film's barrel full of laughs is, at this point, only half full.

It will overflow by the time all is said and done.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Sex Drive , he would have paid . . .

$8.00

Were we thirty years younger (and no BS about the little Cranky inside) we'd probably be going back for seconds.
