Connie and Carla

Starring Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette
Screenplay by Nia Vardalos
Directed by Michael Lembeck
website: www.connieandcarla.com

IN SHORT: Ah, nostalgia! Yon Queen of been there done that doth raise it's boa wrapped head. [Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual humor and drug references. 98 minutes]

Two performers, witnesses to a Chicago mob hit flee the city dressed as women. Hilarity ensues as dumb rich dudes fall flat out for their impersonation.

To those who remember Some Like It Hot as an old Robert Palmer dance tune, get thee to a Blockbuster (or equivalent) and rent the movie of that title. Jack Lemmon. Tony Curtis. Marilyn Monroe. A ten on a scale of ten. For everyone else that wants to watch movies in color is Connie and Carla, which takes the aforementioned old concept and pushes it kicking and screaming into the new millennium.

This year's model features Connie (Nia Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette), life-long friends and long-term performers in dinner theaters far and wide. It's not a great life but it's a living. When their boss is murdered, the pair flee for LA, not knowing that there's a kilo of of cocaine hidden among their things. In the City of Angels, West Hollywood actually, they find sanctuary doing the same old same old, only dressed to the elevens in the style of the drag queens who inhabit the club in which they find work. Hunted by the Mob, whose chief henchman has a thing for "Mame" the duo find a new friend in the club -- Jeff (David Duchovny), who doesn't realize that Connie is a girl.

Well, of course not. It's a drag queen review that he sees. Been there done that.

Connie and Carla is cute as a button as long as the running site of drag queens in season doesn't wear thin on your sensibilities. Comedy-wise, Connie and Carla is cute enough to keep you entertained, even if it doesn't carry the intimate character portraiture that, say, Vardalos' My Big Fat Greek Wedding does. Nia Vardalos is a talented writer but drag queen's are a whole 'nother sort of animal once you add another layer to the apocryphal story done in black and white so many years ago.

On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Connie and Carla , he would have paid . . .

$3.00

rent it.
