IN SHORT: Excepting the [expletive deleted]in' language, very funny . . . [Rated R for language and some sexual content. 108 minutes] We can't honestly remember if the first Bridget Jones movie was as packed full of four letter words (all starting with the letter 'f') as Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is. Our review of that film carries no warning to any adult foolish enough to lug a ten year old kidlet along to this film -- of which there was more t han one at our screening. Flat out don't. The language in the film-- and the Brits do so love using that ol' f-word as a noun, is completely and totally and utterly inappropriate to plant a kidlet. Other than that, there is nothing wrong with Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason that a bucket full of popcorn can't take care of. One last time: that 'R' rating is there for a reason. Leave the kidlets at home! Then relax and laugh you butt off. Bridget is, for those who have short memories or see 280 or so films a year, a pudgy (and insecure about it) 33 year old woman who finally found a place -- not to mention a man to provide -- love for her life. Her boyfriend of nearly 71 days (and counting) is a Human Rights lawyer called Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). As this film unspools, Darcy must deal with Bridget's occasional yearning for ex-boyfriend Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). She doesn't yearn so much in the first act that she isn't fantasizing about affixing the prefix "mrs" to a new surname, but it's noticeable. Said ex is a globetrotting reporter. When Ms. Jones is re-introduced to us, Bridget is doing their best to build up her own reporting skills, albeit on a far smaller scale. When not working, actually whenever she gets the chance to, poor Bridget worries that her beloved shag partner is having an affair with a very sexy fellow lawyer named Rebecca (Jacinda Barrett). Bridget, of course, suspects the worst because insecurity is what her pudgy little self is best at. Dad (Jim Broadbent), Mum (Gemma Jones), and friends Shazzer (Sally Phillips) and Jude (Shirley Henderson) and gay Tom (James Callis) all return from the first movie for small parts. As with most everything in the well written script, you need not know anything about anybody to pick right up on what is going on. On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, he would have paid . . . $5.00Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is still a flick that will please the ladies to a greater extent than the overly macho guys. All of us reg'lar folk (that means those f us glad to have a date) who've been through the Dating Wars will have a good time. We'd peg it at a (normally) $6 on our Ratings Scale but we're knocking off a buck 'cuz the language is way over the top and wore us out.
