A note from Cranky: we found this review in a previously lost archive of material reviewed for CompuServe way back when. We were amateurish back then, so be kind. <g> IN SHORT: Gay comedy. [Rated R for strong sexuality and language. 92 minutes] Jeffrey is no doubt the funniest movie to come out this summer dealing with gays as principle characters. Homophobes won't like more than two or three minutes of the thing (except for a de riguer gay bashing episode) and frankly, if you leave the theater with about 5 minutes to run you'll rave to all your friends about how good it is. The last five minutes resolves the love story and there's some heavy duty spit swapping between Steven Weber (from TVs "Wings") and Michael T. Weiss (who looks like Lucky Vanous from the diet coke spots). Which brings up to Capt. Picard., who has beamed down from the 24th century Enterprise into a pink T shirt and should, at this early date, take at least a Supporting Actor nod for his over the top swish of a performance. It was delightful. Jeffrey is in limited release, so that may be why there isn't a lot of talk here. If you can see it, see it. Then figure out which PREMIERE magazine columnist wrote the thing. Paul Rudnick did the screenplay based on his play, but writes his column under a different name. Guess who. On average, a first run movie ticket will run you Ten Bucks. Were Cranky able to set his own price to Jeffrey, he would have paid . . . $4.00rent ![]() |
